VENT CLIP

A vent-mounted car air freshener developed from ideation through colour, material and finish — a compact housing that frames its own refill and mounts to a vent blade with one hand.

Car vent clip air freshener mounted in a vehicle vent — industrial design by Geoff LaCorte

Vent clip air fresheners sit in one of the most crowded and price-sensitive aisles in the automotive accessory category. The mechanism is solved, the fragrance is commodity, and the shelf is full. Differentiation has to come from form, from how the refill presents itself, and from the physical quality of a single interaction — clipping it on.

The programme ran from open ideation through to resolved CMF direction: brainstorm and sketch exploration to establish the territory, six concept directions taken to render, then a colour, material and finish study across the leading form. Physical prototypes were built to validate proportion and the feel of the clip in hand.

Study

In a commodity category, the refill is the honest signal.

The recurring complaints in this category are not about fragrance. They are about clips that slip off a vent blade under airflow, housings that rattle, and cartridges hidden inside opaque shells so you cannot tell whether the product is fresh or spent.

That last one turned out to be the opportunity. A visible cartridge does two jobs at once: on shelf it shows the buyer exactly what they are getting, and in the car it communicates remaining life without any indicator. Making the refill the hero — rather than hiding it — resolves a shelf problem and a usability problem with the same decision.

Strategy

Frame the cartridge, louvre the shell, spring the clip.

The resolved direction is a squared-circle housing with generous corner radii — soft enough to read as a consumer object rather than a component, geometric enough to hold its own against automotive interior surfaces. A bright bezel rings the cartridge window so the gel reads as the product from a metre away.

Louvred slots cut into the shell face direct incoming airflow across the cartridge rather than around it. On the reverse, a sprung arm engages the vent blade so the unit can be mounted with a single hand and stay put under full fan. CMF studies then explored finish pairings — matte shell against gloss bezel, and colourways keyed to the fragrance variants.

The resolved design puts the fragrance cartridge behind a bright framing bezel, set into a soft-cornered shell whose louvred face channels vent air directly across the gel. A sprung rear arm allows one-handed mounting and resists dislodging under full airflow. CMF direction pairs a matte body with a gloss bezel, with colourways mapped to fragrance variants so the range reads as a family on shelf.
